Libraries across Dumfries and Galloway are getting ready to introduce children to The Mythical Maze!
Step into the Mythical Maze and you’re off on an imaginative adventure that knows no bounds and that will keep children reading throughout the school summer holidays. Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the long summer holidays. The Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland helps get over 40,000 children into libraries to maintain their reading skills and confidence. Because everything changes when we read.
From June 7 all local libraries and mobile libraries will be inviting their young readers to take part in the Mythical Maze, Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland, which is presented by The Reading Agency, in partnership with Tesco Bank. It’s all free and it’s fun, which is great news for parents! Last years Summer Reading Challenge, Creepy House, was a great success and this year’s promises to be just as popular.
Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Community and Customer Services Committee, Councillor Tom McAughtrie says ‘This is a great way of encouraging children to read over the summer holidays. It’s always very popular and encourages children and their families to visit our libraries. ‘
Children are challenged to find their way around the Mythical Maze meeting some fantastical creatures from the world of legend and mythology, including Anansi, the Minotaur, Mermaids, Garuda and the Loch Ness Monster. Help discover the mythical creatures by reading library books, and keep track of the action on a special fold-out poster. During the course of the summer holidays children are encouraged to borrow and read six books from their local library in return for goodies such as zip tags, bookmarks, myth makers and fridge magnets. Every child who completes the challenge will be given a certificate and medal.
Just pop down to your local library from 7 June to register for free.
