Encouraging start for new choirs

ORGANISERS said this week they were delighted at the number of children in Wigtownshire who attended the first meeting of the new choirs formed after the closure of the Galloway Branch of the National Youth Choir of Scotland.

The council-run Galloway Machars choir and the Galloway Rhins choir had their first get together last week.

Kate Picken, from the council’s schools services, said: “We are really pleased at the numbers for both choirs. A lot of children attended on the first night and we also had parents willing to help out with the administration.

“Although there was a good uptake there are still places available if anyone wants to come along and join.”

The Machars Choir meets every Thursday during the school term in Penninghame Primary School from 4pm to 5pm for P4-7 and from 4.30pm to 5.30pm for secondary pupils. The Rhins Choir meets in Stranraer Academy music department on Thursdays from 4-5pm.

The National Youth Choir of Scotland caused outrage in April when it announced, without consultation, the Galloway Branch was to be merged with the Dumfries Branch meaning a 100-mile plus round trip for keen choristers on a school night.

The Council then stepped in to create the new choirs.
