Drug mule avoids jail term

A Newton Stewart man avoided jail this week despite acting as what the sheriff called a “drug mule”.

Andrew Hedley, 43, of 2 Cree Houses, Millcroft, Minnigaff admitted transporting cannabis at Mayberry Cottage at Palgowan Farm, Glentrool and in Morecambe, as well as other un-named locations, between 17 July 2012 and 25 June 2013.

At Stranraer Sheriff Court on Tuesday, the court heard that Hedley had delivered packages to people but claimed he didn’t know the exact contents other than that “it was probably grass”.

The fiscal also told the court that there had been investigations into a much larger drug ring but the case against Hedley’s involvement had been deserted.

Sheriff Kenneth Robb said: “You did this for financial gain and brought this on yourself.”

At the same hearing, Anthony Fox from Kendal was jailed for six months and 20 days for cultivating the cannabis Hedley transported.
