Destination D&G take over wildlife festival
Destination Dumfries and Galloway (DD&G), the region’s industry led tourism organisation, announced earlier this week that it will be the new management of the Dumfries and Galloway Wildlife Festival from March 3 to April 15.
Scottish Natural Heritage and Dumfries and Galloway Council have pledged to continue funding of the Dumfries and Galloway Wildlife Festival.
Wilma Finlay, Chair of DD&G and Managing Director of the Cream o’ Galloway said: “The Board of DD&G is delighted to be working with Scottish Natural Heritage and Dumfries & Galloway Council to ensure this wonderful festival can continue. The Dumfries and Galloway Wildlife Festival celebrates and invites us all to take part in our region’s uniquely diverse wildlife. With visitors already coming to the region to take part in the festival, we look forward to working with our partners to attract more visitors to the region and to secure the festival’s future as a cornerstone event for locals and tourists alike.”
Peter Norman, Biodiversity Officer Dumfries and Galloway Council added: “The Wildlife Festival has steadily grown over the last eight years and now gives many local people and an increasing number of visitors an opportunity to get close to our fantastic wildlife. With the support of DD&G, the festival will continue to grow, with more events, more wildlife and a wider appreciation of the year-round wildlife attractions that the region has to offer.”
This year the two-week festival will include a variety of events ranging from family activities to evening wildlife watching as well as tours of the deer range in the Galloway Forest Park, studying ospreys, watching the geese and swans at the Wigtown Bay Local Nature Reserve, visiting the Galloway Fisheries Trust, learning about different bird calls or enjoying the RSPB’s open day at the Crook of Baldoon. You can even learn how to make tattie bogles (scarecrows).
