Crime figures shed positive light on force

ROAD casualties in the region have dropped more than 16 percent in three years, annual figures out this week have revealed.

The Annual Annual Public Performance Report 2011/2012 forDumfries and Galloway Constabulary also shows that crimes of violence, indecency, dishonesty and vandalism are down 18.9 percent and that detection rates are up 2.5 percent.

Commenting on the performance, chief constable Patrick Shearer said: “These figures are truly remarkable and as chief constable I am very proud to have led a force which, year on year, has strived to deliver a first class policing service for the people of Dumfries and Galloway.

“The effort, commitment and dedication of our police officers and police staff can only be described as excellent and have helped ensure that Dumfries and Galloway is the safest it has been for many years.

“Key to this success is our close working relationships with our partners and the community, and in particular the support received from the convener and members of the Police, Fire and Rescue Committee (PFRC) Is truly appreciated. These close working arrangements were wholeheartedly endorsed when the force and the PFRC were inspected by the Audit Commission and her Majesty’s Inspectorate for Constabulary in Scotland.”

South of Scotland MSP Joan McAlpine also welcomed the statistics

Ms McAlpine stated: “This reflects the national picture in which the SNP Government is presiding over the lowest crime rates since 1976.

“This is testimony to the extra police officers we have put on the street across Scotland and in the South West, with police numbers reaching their highest ever recorded level.”

The SNP MSP added: “I am pleased to hear Chief Constable Shearer attribute the fall in part to the preventative work that is championed by the Scottish Government, in particular in the areas of Youth Justice and Drug and Alcohol measures.”
