Firefighters have been tackling a huge fire at a new-build house between Gatehouse and Kirkcudbright which broke out at around 5pm last night.
Passing motorists spotted smoke billowing from the timber-clad building just off the A755 Gatehouse to Kirkcudbright road on Thursday afternoon.
Crews rushed to the scene and at its peak, the fire was being fought by 40 fire officers. The difficult operation was further hampered by poor access to the site which is taken via a track through fields.
The uninhabited house, which its new owners were due to move into in a fortnight, has been left a charred ruin.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “First responders from Kirkcudbright and Gatehouse fire stations arrived to find a well-developed fire and requested additional resources as they began to tackle the blaze.
A”dditional appliances were sent from Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie as well as Dalmellington in East Ayrshire as the SFRS team worked through the night to bring the fire under control.”
