Court assault man jailed

A MACHARS MAN who assaulted two women court officials was jailed for five months at Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court on Friday.

Sheriff Alistair Brown told John Haigh when he appeared for sentence that he had inflicted violence on the courtroom official and the female police officer even when they were crying out in pain.

Haigh, 49, of The Cartshed, Ravenstone, was found guilty of two charges of assault which took place at Stranraer Sheriff Court on August 16 last year while he was on bail.

He had denied assaulting the courtroom official by pushing her against a door to her injury and to assault the police officer by struggling violently with her and pushing and pulling her to her injury.

His agent, Paul Dunne, said the accused did not hold any ill will or bad blood against the two people and it was not a pre-meditated malicious act.

He agreed with the reports which showed that there was a low risk of re-offending and asked for a community based disposal.

But Sheriff Brown said: “I recognise that in some of the references produced, you are described as a good man but sometimes good people do bad things.

“In this case you assaulted two ladies discharging their duties as court staff. I made it clear at your trial that I did not accept your evidence. There were no signs that they were overbearing. They were polite to a fault and they called you sir.

“But you inflicted violence on them even when they were crying out in pain.”

He also told Haigh that what he was being sentenced for had nothing to do with what he had appeared originally at Stranraer for.
