Council take over Drummore Harbour
DUMFRIES and Galloway Council's Planning, Housing and Environment Services Committee has agreed that a draft Harbour Empowerment Order be used for Drummore Harbour and its associated harbour limits.
Members agreed not to explore further a partnership approach with the current owners of Drummore Harbour and said the Property Services department would provide a valuation to allow a bid to be made to the Corporate Policy Committee for funding to acquire land.
There is a budget of 40,000 to prepare and promote a Harbour Empowerment Order for Drummore but, at present, no funding has been identified to acquire Drummore Harbour.
Councillor Roger Grant, chairman of the Planning, Housing and Environment Services Committee, said: "The council carried out consultation and local people were overwhelmingly in favour of a Harbour Empowerment Order.
"This would enable us to improve the management of the village's harbour.
"Drummore is the most southerly village in Scotland.
"In the Wigtown area plan, Luce Bay is designated as an area for sailing and recreation and Drummore's location offers great tourism potential.
"It's ideally situated for pleasure craft sailing round the Mull of Galloway and visiting the likes of Portpatrick and the redeveloped Stranraer Waterfront. So we can't just sit back and let the harbour remain in its present state."
Mr Grant added: "I'm extremely pleased that the members of the committee were united in taking this bold decision."
