Council agree on bowling centre objection

COMMUNITY councillors in Newton Stewart have agreed on the terms of an objection they will submit against the proposed closure of Minnigaff Indoor Bowling Centre.

At the first meeting of the Cree Valley Council’s new line-up on Monday, a discussion was held between members old and new over the plans to close the sporting facility and allow it to instead be used as a warehouse.

Currently used by around 200 bowlers, some felt the closure would spell disaster for the sportsmen and women who attend for games and to socialise from all over the region.

But others felt that businesses should not be shunned from the town and new members Clifford Smithers and David McCathie agreed the worry would be if the prospective buyer, Chris Cadman-Goodwin, was refused his change of use application that he would instead moved his computer business away from the area.

Mr McCathie said: “Surely if this does become a warehouse, it would provide jobs for people?”

But other members felt the traffic noise and volume of larger vehicles that would require access to the site for deliveries would be detrimental to the quality of life for nearby residents.

The tight junction at the Cree Inn was also a concern, as was Culmoden Manor Nursing Home next door to the bowling centre.

It was also pointed out that in the year of the Olympics, to lose a sporting venue like the centre would go against the nation’s current sporting attitude.

The council agreed to object on all of these grounds.
