IF you are a land manager or if you like walking, cycling or horse-riding in the countryside then 2013 will be a significant year as Dumfries and Galloway Council will formally adopt the Core Path Plan on 15th January.

The Core Path Plan has taken over seven years to reach this stage from the first of 664 consultation meetings and submissions, the mapping, surveying, inspection, and selection of the suggestions, the negotiations with land managers of the 471 suggested alterations to routes, the formal report on the 27 unresolved issues from the Department of Planning and Environmental Appeals, to Ministerial Approval.

The plan covers the whole of the region and is available to view on www.dumgal.gov.uk/corepaths

It provides a basic framework of routes around communities to important points of interest and to provide a linkage with long distance routes - Scotland’s Great Trails. They link with general access to hills, forests and coasts. Also with wider path networks and walks on tracks and quiet byways.

Dumfries and Galloway Outdoor Access Forum has been involved from the beginning with the Core Path Plan and will be involved in its implementation. The Outdoor Access Forum is set up under the Land Reform Legislation to advise and help the Access Authority.

Peter Ross, Chair of The Outdoor Access Forum said: ”I’m excited that the Core Path Plan here in our region matches our land of farms, coast, hills and forests. It will set a framework for future generations of residents and visitors to enjoy. It will provide those who manage our land the confidence to go about their normal business without conflict.

“I certainly, and I’m sure Dumfries and Galloway’s Access Team do too, welcome the public’s contribution to the implementation of the plan so do get in touch.”
