Castle set to open again

One of the region’s most famous castles is set to re-open next Friday, March 29.

Threave Castle, built on an island in the River Dee, is closed during the winter months but opens annually each year to welcome visitors from around the world.

Built by Archibald the Grim, Lord of Galloway and 3rd Earl of Douglas, the castle includes an artillery fortification built before 1455 when James II besieged the castle. Due to its location, the meadow surrounding the castle is full of wild flowers, while otters and ospreys hunt in the surrounding river.

Susan Loch, head of visitor operations and community engagement at Historic Scotland, which runs the site, said: “We are working hard to get the site ready to welcome visitors.

“Threave Castle is one of a number of Historic Scotland seasonal sites across Scotland, including MacLellan’s Castle, Whithorn Priory and Glenluce Abbey that are re-opening to the public over the Easter weekend.

“Spring is a great time to enjoy the sites, particularly in this the Year of Natural Scotland, and we have lots of great things going on across our estate of properties this year from nature events to costumed performances to keep visitors entertained.”
