Caravan plan splits council

THE recent application for the creation of a caravan site at Wigtown Harbour divided opinion among the councillors when planning matters were discussed at the monthly meeting of the Royal Burgh of Wigtown and District Community Council this week.

The plans, lodged by landowner Alan Wykes, include the caravan site, a house, a picnic area, a turbine and toilet block.

As the caravan site was to be situated alongside the banks of the Bladnoch River concerns were raised about the possibility of flooding and also losing the area as a public amenity. The harbour is used during Wigtown’s annual civic week for the popular raft race. But there were also positives for the town, including providing holiday accommodation, something at a premium during peak times such as the book festival.

Chairman Nick Walker used his casting vote to decide the council would not object to the plans, after the council was locked five-five in a vote on the matter.
