Buyer wanted for Whithorn Post Office

The Post Office in Whithorn has been put on the market leading to further concerns about future banking facilities in the town.

Last month RBS announced it was closing its branches in Whithorn and Glenluce due to a fall in customer numbers. This led to a Galloway Gazette petition against the closure of Whithorn’s last remaining bank, that has gathered nearly 400 signatures of support. The petition will be forwarded to RBS chiefs at their Gogarburn headquarters in Edinburgh.

RBS said that, after the branches close in September, banking services would be covered by a mobile bank and through “an arrangement with the local Post Office”.

But on the Post Office website this week, a retailer is being sought to either purchase the current business, based at 68 George Street, or incorporate a Post Office Local into their existing or proposed business.

Asked if this news would affect their plans, RBS had not responded at the time of going to press.

Representatives of the state-owned lender have so far refused to meet the members of Whithorn Community Council to discuss the widespread apprehension felt by RBS customers.
