Over 250 of the region’s top business people celebrated the success of businesses from all over the region at a glittering dinner at Easterbrook Hall, Dumfries, recently.

Hosted by BBCs Catriona Shearer the decisions of the judges on the 34 finalists drawn from an initial list of 83 nominations were announced.

Brian Rennie President of the Chamber of Commerce that organised the Awards said “We were delighted both with the quality and quantity of businesses that came forward for this, our second Business Awards. The judges had a tough time deciding each category so just to be shortlisted was a real achievement. On the night we heard of some great stories from great businesses, all of which augurs well for the future.”

Dumfries & Galloway Council were the principal sponsor of the awards and Council Leader Ronnie Nicholson added “Our Council were delighted to again be principal sponsor of the Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. Building the local economy is the number one priority of the new council administration. Our Council’s Economic Development team has been working with Business Gateway to support the region’s small and medium sized enterprises with advice, financial assistance and employment opportunities. These awards recognise the success of our businesses and our region’s entrepreneurial spirit. I am determined to build an on-going dialogue with the business community across Dumfries and Galloway so we can continue to improve the support we provide and allow them to create the jobs locally our region needs. ”

The Zero Waste category reflected the work that businesses have to do now to reduce and recycle and this was presented to Cream O’ Galloway who have turned their waste streams into a resource in a biodigester producing electricity and heat to power their business.

The Most Promising Business category was open to businesses set up within the last three years. With a quarter of all the applications in this category this provided the judges with some of their greatest challenges.

A joint winner in this section was New Luce based Ladderlimb for their “textbook approach” to bring an innovative product to the market which is now selling like hot cakes both at home and in countries as far away as USA, Australia and New Zealand.
