Horticultural fans gasped with amazement last Saturday when a huge branch from an tree in Mochrum Churchyard suddenly snapped off and crashed 30 feet to the ground.

As around a dozen people were having an open air lunch nearby before visiting the annual flower festival inside the church, there was an almighty crash. The 20 foot long branch luckily fell between two rows of graves and no one was in the vicinity at the time.

A spokesman for Dumfries and Galloway Council said: “The Council’s DGFirst Neighbourhood Services will assess the situation and deal with it appropriately as soon as practicable.”
