Blind Jonnie is Stranraer’s favourite character

PEOPLE in and around Stranraer have had their say on which character from history should be selected as part of choosing a new artwork for the town.

Dumfries and Galloway Council carried out the consultation as part of the on-going development of Stranraer’s Town Centre. This artwork will add to the work previously carried out within the town which gained a Saltire Award and a Scottish Design Award in Public Realm Landscaping Development. This interpretation, together with future town centre developments, will work towards establishing Stranraer’s credentials as a seaside town and leisure destination.

Dumfries and Galloway Council officers did extensive research on local characters and provided three options from which local people could choose their favourite.

The results of the consultation which ran from the 1 July to the 31 August are:

Blind Jonnie 517

(One of Stranraer’s legendary street musicians.)

Stranraer Fishwives 436

(Local women who used to supplement their income by going down to the Harbour to collect fallen fish from the fishing boats, and sell them to friends and neighbours door to door.)

Admiral Sir John Ross 138

(Sir John built the North West Castle one of Stranraer’s best known landmarks.)

So the character chosen for further development as an artwork is Blind Jonnie.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the Consultation and for taking the time to complete the voting forms.

The next stage of this project will be to secure further funding to select and appoint an artist. The artist appointed will provide various interpretations of the artwork. Members of the public will be asked for their views again to choose the final design.

This project is part of the on-going Stranraer and Loch Ryan Regeneration Developments.
