Benefits cheat jailed

A MAN was jailed for six months on Tuesday after receiving £13,830 in benefits he wasn’t entitled to.

Brian Allan, 50, of Antrim Avenue, Stranraer, had received a lump sum of £28,000 from Strathclyde Pension Scheme and failed to inform Dumfries and Galloway Council or the Department of Work and Pensions, and continued to receive benefits from them between December 2009 and March 2011.

Lawyer Paul Feeney said this all came about after Allan lost his job due to a coughing illness and suggested that a community payback order would be appropriate for his client, who was a first-offender.

But Sheriff Kenneth Robb said that given the amounts involved, the only possible sentence was one of jail.
