At the beginning of July, Reverend Mike Binks stepped down as president of Newton Stewart Rotary Club after a full year of activities and events.

Incoming president Ken McCubbin is well known throughout Newton Stewart as a former teacher at Douglas Ewart High School and as an active participant in the Galloway Mountain Rescue Team.

Mike and his wife Sandy have lived in the area for over 25 years and have both been active members of the community through work and community activities such as the church and the scouts. They are moving to Lincolnshire to be closer to ageing parents and will certainly be a loss to our community as a whole.

On 27th June, friends gathered at the Douglas Ewart High School for an evening of fun and fellowship. Guests were treated to a lovely buffet, produced by Sally hair of Sandhead. Entertainment aside from music and laughter, was provided by the Newton Stewart Rotary Club. Club members organised a casino night whereby participants bought ‘casino money’ to trade for chips to place bets on either the roulette wheel or the black jack table. When they had won more chips, these were traded in for a ‘casino cheque’ and the winner of the first prize of £50 was the one who had the highest casino cheque.

Guests also donated various raffle prizes. Approximately £1,800 was raised altogether, to be shared between the Rotary Club, the Basics Bank and the scouts all of which both Sandy and Mike have supported fully during their time in Newton Stewart.

Mike and Sandy thanked everybody for coming and for sharing their memories and making such generous donations to good causes.

Rotary members come from all walks of life, all professions and backgrounds. The only criteria required to become a member is an active wish to participate in your local community and a wish to have fun! To help the Newton Stewart Club go on for another 47 years and longer, why not come along to a meeting at The Bruce Hotel at Newton Stewart from 6.15pm on a Thursday and see what we do?
