Abuse claims decline

The number of incidents of domestic abuse in Dumfries and Galloway has fallen by 8 percent.

The latest figures show that the number of recorded incidents in the region fell by 116 from 1407 in 2010/11 to 1291 in 2011/12.

The most reported type of offence was common assault, followed by threatening or abusive behaviour. The report states that the overwhelming majority of incidents take place behind closed doors.

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown welcomed the reduction when he said: “I am pleased we have seen a reduction in the number of domestic abuse incidents in Dumfries and Galloway but we must remain vigilant because there are still far too many local people suffering at the hands of an abuser. The overwhelming majority of incidents take place behind closed doors and the likelihood is there are many people too scared to come forward.

“Homes should be places of safety and those who assault or threaten a spouse, partner or other member of the household need to be sent a clear message that domestic abuse is never acceptable.”
