Abattoir gets £1.3m grant

a grant of £1.3million has been awarded to the Dumfries and Galloway Food Co-operative towards the cost of an abattoir at Craignair, near Dalbeattie.

And the boost from the Scottish government has been welcomed by Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Alex Fergusson. He said: “I very much welcome this announcement as a real incentive to the D&G Food Co-operative to go full steam ahead with this project. It is utter madness that the high quality livestock that we produce so well in this part of Scotland travels all around the UK to be slaughtered and processed.

“This development will mean that we add far greater value to that produce before it leaves the region, that we massively reduce the amount of food miles involved in bringing our produce to the tables of the United Kingdom and it will provide very welcomed employment locally.

“I am fully aware of the extent of local concerns about this abattoir. However, modern plants of this nature can and do operate successfully in close proximity to built-up areas. They are constantly monitored and checked under the most stringent of environmental criteria, to such an extent that I would not envisage any detrimental impact on the town of Dalbeattie.

“I welcome this grant whole heartedly and wish the co-operative every success as it takes this project forward.”
