A warm welcome back to Dumfries and Galloway

IT’S a case of ‘once bitten, forever smitten’ for holiday-makers in Dumfries and Galloway, according to a new report.

The Scotland Visitor Survey has revealed that 80 per cent of visitors to the region last year were making a return trip - one of the highest percentages in the country - while more than two thirds (69 per cent) would “definitely recommend” Dumfries and Galloway to others.

Carried out by VisitScotland, the national tourism organisation, the survey also shows that the average length of a summer stay in the region was 4.65 nights, while nearly three quarters said they were thinking about making a return visit within the next five years.

Shopping topped the list of most popular activities (40 per cent), while sampling local food and enjoying walks also proved popular.

Paula McDonald, Regional Director at VisitScotland, said: “With our rich variety of things to see and do, I am not surprised that visitors to Dumfries and Galloway are compelled to come back here time and time again. The region features prominently in a brand new VisitScotland television advert highlighting the Year of Natural Scotland and I look forward to seeing more people coming to discover, or re-discover, exactly what we have to offer.”

The latest full-year statistics available for the region show that 870,000 people visited Dumfries and Galloway in 2011, generating £193 million for the economy.
