16,000 hens killed in farm blaze

AROUND 16,000 hens were killed in a fire in a poultry shed at Elrig Farm on Wednesday night.

The 100m-long by 30m-wide shed is thought to have caught alight following a fault with a ventilator, but a fire investigation will be carried out to determine the exact cause.

Fire pumps from Newton Stewart, Whithorn, Gatehouse, Kirkcudbright and Stranraer were called out at around 6.30pm.

Firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading to other sheds nearby but were unable to save the birds or the shed.

The crews remained on-site until after 3am with one team staying overnight to guard against any re-ignition.

A police spokesman said: “There appear to be no suspicious circumstances, it seems the cause may have been down to an electrical fault.”
