Last week, from Thursday evening until late on Sunday, Kirkcudbright was awash with jazz lovers from all over the UK and further afield.
The came from as far as St Austell in Cornwall, to Fraserburgh and Spean Bridge in the north, with some from Northern Ireland. There were also visitors from Sweden and the USA and reports were received of sightings of people from (whisper it) Dumfries.
Some 17 bands played in venues throughout the town to knowledgeable and discerning audiences, which appreciated the quality of music being performed.
Saturday started with a Brolly Parade with Parade Marshals Sheila Fawkes, Pamela Bayes and Sandra Mitchell and the Kirkcudbright All Star Jazz Band leading a large group of participants with their beautifully decorated brollies.
Amongst the many very fine band performances were a number of outstanding contributions - from Creole Clarinets and Friends, the clarinet players coming from Hamburg and Munich in Germany, from Rose Room, a Scottish “Hot Club” style quartet, from Mike Lovell’s Six in a Bar with Rosie and from Ken Mathieson’s Classic Jazz Orchestra while Mellow Baku Avstreih wowed her audiences with her vocal talents.
On Sunday evening the Festival was brought to a splendid finale by the A7 Band with “Spats” Langham and by TJ Johnson and his Band sending a great many happy fans home and with many of them already making plans and booking for the 2014 Festival – the dates of which will be 12 to 15 June 2014.
