ITV Border is to broadcast a series of programmes examining the history and development of the independence question in Scotland as part of ITV’s coverage plans for southern Scottish viewers ahead of the referendum in September 2014.
Road to Referendum, presented by Iain Macwhirter and featuring a host of interviews from cultural commentators, politicians and well-known figures, will cover the post-war period to the present day, chronicling the social, cultural and political changes in Scotland and the evolution of the independence debate.
ITV Border will also be producing and broadcasting a two-part documentary series later this summer, A Scottish Journey. The programmes, which will be filmed by ITV Border in southern Scotland and feature voices from across the ITV Border region, will look at the arguments in favour and against Scotland being in the union.
The documentaries will form part of the extensive programming ITV Border plans to run between the summer of 2013 and the independence referendum of September 18, 2014, in addition to regular coverage within ITV Border’s Lookaround programme.
The first programme in the Road to Referendum series analyses the period 1945 to 1974, starting immediately after the war and ending with Labour’s win in the general election of October 1974 and the election of Margaret Thatcher as leader of the Conservative Party. After the 1979 devolution referendum, programme two is dominated by the Thatcher Years up to 1991. The final programme starts with the Conservative win at the 1992 general election and examines the recent political landscape in Scotland in the run up to the referendum next year.
The three 60-minute programmes, produced by STV productions, will air this June, and will include interviews with First Minister Alex Salmond and Prime Minister David Cameron. Other contributors range from MSPs and MPs including Margo MacDonald MSP and George Galloway, to authors including Iain Banks, William McIlvanney and Christoper Brookmyre, musician Pat Kane and actor Elaine C Smith.
Road to Referendum will air on ITV Border on June 6, 13 and 20, at 10.35pm.
