Cresswell Maternity Wing at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary has once again benefited from the support and generosity of the local Dumfries and Galloway stillbirth and neonatal death charity Sands.

This time Sands funded a complete refurbishment and redecoration of the antenatal clinic’s counselling room where potential problems during pregnancy can be discussed sensitively in a comfortable and supportive environment.

On behalf of all the midwives and staff in the Antenatal Clinic, Nicola Harper, Senior Charge Midwife, said: “We are very grateful to Sands. Before the refurbishment the room was quite clinical and bare. It has now been completely transformed with sofas where families can sit together, and soft furnishings to make it as homely as possible.

“Although this does not make difficult conversations around pregnancy problems any easier we hope that it demonstrates our compassion and commitment to supporting women and their families, especially when there are potential problems identified.”

Dumfries and Galloway Sands is a voluntary group of parents that aims to offer support, understanding, comfort and most importantly, a listening ear to families experiencing the loss of a baby.
