The speed with which Friday’s snowfall began to worsen caught many unawares, and those who rely on the road networks in Galloway came off worst.
So when cars began to grind to a halt, panic set in for those awaiting loved ones who didn’t show up.
The A714 at Baltersan, between Wigtown and Newton Stewart, the A75 at Palnure and outside Castle Douglas were just some spots where drivers had to hunker down and await help as snowdrifts began to bury their vehicles all afternoon and evening.
One father in Newton Stewart, who grew increasingly concerned for his young daughter and her mother, who were trapped in their car for more than six hours without help from the stretched services clearing the roads up ahead, donned his wellies and trekked from the town to Baltersan to reach them and take them to safety. His daughter is now calling her daddy a hero.
