Newton Stewart author and charity fundraiser Sammi Wood has picked a tandem bungee jump for her latest charity challenge.

The 26-year-old, who suffers from epilepsy after contracting encephalitis as a child, wants Galloway Gazette readers to help her raise money for the children’s ward at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary that saved her life, by donating to her fundrasing page.

Sammi explains more behind her inspiration to help other children who find themselves, like her, relying on the skills of the medical staff in pediatric wards to survive.

She said: “I was born a healthy 7lb 12 oz baby with no problems. At three and a half years old I took ill with encephalitis and transvers sinus thrombosis. I was in a coma for eight day us and only had a 10 per cent chance of survival.

“When I got home from hospital three month after, I could only move my index finger on my right hand and my right eye. I was in a vegetative state and it was thought I would remain like that.

“As the years passed I learned to walk, talk and eat again and I am now only left with a weak left side and epilepsy.

“Thanks to doctors and nurses I now lead a pretty normal life, although I still need help with some things.

“Over the last four years I have done various fund-raisers and have raised just under £6000 in total. I have done this by climbing Cairnsmore, doing a tandem skydive, a couple of curry and quiz nights, raffles and quiz sheets.

“This year I am scaring the hell out of my parents and doing a tandem bungee jump with Brian Hall. He is a tutor at D&G College, Stranraer Campus. The reason he is doing it with me is because he always said I would never be able to climb Cairnsmore! He was with me when I reached the summit and said that he would never say “no” to anything I wanted to do ever again!

“I’m also having a psychic night on July 31 at Scent O’ Galloway, the tickets are all sold, and a curry and quiz night on November 3 in the Bruce hotel.

“This time I am raising funds for Ward 15 Endowment Fund (the children’s ward in DGRI). This money will be used to buy much needed equipment for the ward. So I really hope lots of people reading this will donate to this great cause. It’s a place no one wants to have to go to but it has saved a lot of lives, including mine.”
