Half a million overspend in social work department

THE latest financial report from Dumfries and Galloway Council’s social work department shows a potential overspend of over half a million pounds.

And the news comes just weeks after the department sought £600,000 in emergency funding to cover rising costs of homecare.

The figures, due before councillors at a meeting of the social works services committee in Dumfries on Thursday forecasts a deficit of £537,000.

Last month, the local authority’s external auditors reported that they had uncovered shortcomings in the financial management of the service, but no further details have so far been disclosed.
