Girls show they have ‘shear’ class

Ten local girls are going to shear in excess of 500 sheep for charity on May 31 at Craig Wilson Auction Mart, Newton Stewart.

These 10 girls are by no means professionals but for a good cause they are willing to put themselves to the test.

The two charities chosen, having strong local connections, are Newton Stewart Community Hospital and the Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET).

The 10 girls are Carol McKenna, Sheena Horner, Helen Ryman, Shannon Nicholson, Kyla Graham, Lynn Wilson, Kirsty Wilson, Hilary Howatson, Kate Macdonald and Libby Templeton. They’ll pick up hand pieces at 9am and continue non-stop until 5pm. In this time they aim to shear at least 500 sheep between them.

While the main event is going on there will also be professional wool handlers on hand, Ewe to You owners Alan and Helen Brown will also be displaying what can be done with sheep milk and Sarah-Jane Colby showing how to make wool felt animals. From 5pm the professionals will take to the ring with a speed shear.

At 8pm a dance and charity auction is being held at McMillan Hall with The Big O’Cajuns. Tickets are available from Libby on 07785786155.

This dance is entry by ticket and over-18s only. A maximum of four tickets can be ordered on each booking.
