Garlieston Gala week got off to a great start with last year’s Queen, Anna Ramsay, passing over her sash to Queen Cara McQueen, who was duly crowned by Garlieston Primary School headmistress, Ros Evans.

The newly crowned Queen and her party then taken on a procession round the village by Elaine Ramsay with her Clydesdale horses and brewery dray.

After the procession a five-a-side football tournament was held in the all weather court. The junior winners were three plus two and the adult winners were Passion 91.

On Tuesday afternoon a children’s sports day was held in the field and on Tuesday night a family treasure hunt was held. There was 15 teams and the winners were Peace Doods. Afterwards a disco was held in the hall for under 16s with the kids dancing the night away to the music of Davie Steele.

A bonnie baby show was held on Wednesday afternoon in the square. The sun fetched out a good crowd and Jackie and Ian from the caravan site had a hard job to do. After the bonnie baby, a pet show followed with David Campion judging.

Unfortunately the sun didn’t last till Thursday but nonetheless the sandcastle competition and teddy bears picnic went ahead with the good old faithful turning out.

Thursday evening fetched an evening of laughter and fun with a challenge football match between Garlieston Chicks and Garlieston ‘Old Maids’. The match was a close affair with both teams putting on a great show of artistic flair and at the end of time a 3-3 draw was a fair result.

It was to the harbour on Friday morning for crab fishing. The sun was shining and fetched the crowds with it. With the harbour was packed with budding fisherman and a great time was had by all.

A two-bowl tournament was held on Friday night with Paul Turner and Barry Smith coming out on top.

Saturday afternoon brought a fun filled action packed day in the field. The scorching hot day had everyone in good spirits. The main event this year was ‘It’s a knockout’.

A fancy dress competition was held in the early evening with a fabulous turnout and the standards were outstanding. Jackie and Ian had the unenviable job of judging.

A dance was held in the village hall later in the evening. The sell out crowd danced the night away to the outstanding Kippy & Co.

On Sunday at lunchtime, a themed raft race was held. The winners were The Black Pearl with The Fishermans Friends second. The best dressed raft went to The Big Babies.

Thanks to PIRSAC, the coastguards and all the other safety boats for their attendance. During the cream teas a raffle of a painting donated by local painter, Cameron Houston, was drawn and won by Jean Brolls.

The committee would like to thank all those who supported, assisted and aided with the gala week which has made the week such a success.
