The Scottish Parliament’s new MSP for Galloway and West Dumfries is Finlay Carson from the Scottish conservatives.
He pipped the SNP’s Aileen McLeod by 1514 votes in last night’s election.
At five minutes past five this morning, returning officer Gavin Stevenson took to the stage at Easterbrook Hall in Dumfries and asked all the candidates to join him.
He then read out the following results:
Finlay Carson, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party - 14,527
Aileen McLeod, Scottish National Party (SNP) -13,013
Andrew Robert Metcalf, Scottish Liberal Democrats - 947
Fiona O’Donnell, Scottish Labour Party - 4,876
The number of votes cast was 33,458, which was 59.4 per cent of the electorate. There were 95 rejected ballot papers.
In his victory speech, Finlay Carson paid tribute to his predecessor in the seat, Alex Fergusson, adding that in following Mr Fergusson to holyrood, he had “big boots to fill”.
