THIS week’s choice comes from the selection of old photos given to The Galloway Gazette by Stephen McDowall from Newton Stewart. It shows horses being commandeered by the army for the First World War in 1914. This practice was highlighted in the recent film ‘War Horse’. Six million horses served the Allied Forces during the war with only a small percentage returning home. The field the horses are in is now Auchendoon Road, Newton Stewart, and the house visible at the top is now Cornwall Park Care Home.
If you have any interesting old photographs please hand then into The Galloway Gazette offices in Victoria Street, Newton Stewart or e-mail them to firstname.lastname@example.org
