Galloway MSP Alex Fergusson has strongly backed a joint report by the Scottish Campaign for National Parks and the Association for Protection of Rural Scotland which calls for the creation of more National Parks in areas such as Galloway.

Following publication of the report Mr Fergusson said: “The most important fact to emerge from the research that was undertaken by these two organisations is that National Parks are a cost effective way of “providing a major economic boost to a number of fragile areas in Scotland”. Furthermore, as experience from other countries such as New Zealand and Norway show, National Parks stem rural depopulation, provide a range of job opportunities and help to generate millions of pounds of extra revenue annually from tourism and other rural industries”.

“As I have argued for years, a Galloway National Park would be a win-win situation for our Region. This call, from two highly respected charities, should be taken seriously by all levels of Government. For years we have searched for a reason for North Bound traffic to ‘turn left at Gretna’ – I can think of nothing that would do that more effectively than the creation of a Galloway National Park”.
