DG First’s management committee met today to discuss performance indicators, including how to improve staff absence numbers.

The target for the department was nine days per employee, but statistics show that 16.29 days were lost for each (non-teacher) local government employee through sickness absence in 2015/16.

A report to elected members from council officers states: “The department has implemented service action plans to improve absence levels. DG First Service are carrying out a trial to target first day absence particularly around stress and other muscular types of absence. There is now capacity to record and report the number of return to work interviews completed as a percentage of absences.”

The rate of absenteeism includes mandatory absence due to services working in a caring and catering environment along with an element of staff absence through working outdoors in inclement weather.
