One of Newton Stewart’s most iconic structures, the Cree Bridge, will be closed during the day for at least another ten days to allow repair work to take place on the 203-year-old like between Newton Stewart and Minnigaff.

A spokesperson for Dumfries and Galloway Council said: “Cree Bridge, Newton Stewart, is closed to traffic for repair work. The work started on 16th May and is expected to take up to two weeks to complete, subject to further inspection. The bridge is being reopened each evening to all vehicles. Pedestrian access is being maintained at all times. The purpose of the work is to remove vegetation from the bridge and repoint as necessary.”
