The car has been abandoned in Fleet Bay, off Sandgreen and Cardoness, has finally been removed.

Initial attempts had failed as the vehicle had been moved by the tides and become lodged between the mud and sand banks of Fleet Bay.

The car was only partially visible at low tide making access difficult. Eventually a vehicle from the Dumfries 4X4 club was used to to haul the car out under the watchful eye of the Coastguard.

Leslie Paton, public health services manager, commented: “This is a well known and well used part of the coast and we decided we could not leave the car where it was. Besides being an eyesore and posing a risk to those who use the area we were concerned about any possible leakage of oil, fuel and hydraulic fluids from the vehicle and the effect that such pollution could have on the surrounding area.”
