It was well worth the long drive down to Telford, Shropshire, last month for two Wigtownshire poultry exhibitors.

The Poultry Club of Great Britain’s National Poultry Show which took place at the Telford International Conference Centre had just over 7000 exhibits on display and with 260 Call ducks taking part.

Caroline McCornick who breeds Calls at Barquill, near Wigtown, just went down to gain experience. However, it turned out to be an outstanding show for her with three firsts in the Silver, Dark Silver and Blue Fawn female classes.

Caroline said: “Against all this competition I just couldn’t believe it! I am so thrilled as the birds soon settled in their pens after the long drive here and have done so well.”

Another Wigtownshire exhibitor, Kenny McKie of Baldoon, was also placed with a male Cuckoo Pekin.

He said: “I cannot believe how large this show is so I’m so pleased to have won a card.”

Local people can enjoy seeing birds from these exhibitors at the Wigtown Poultry Show on Wednesday, August 2, 2017. Anyone wishing to take part can apply for a poultry schedule from February 2017 onwards from Janice Houghton-Wallace, Cults Farmhouse, Whithorn, Newton Stewart, DG8 8HA or Tel: 01988 600763.
