A gimmer from Straiton was the champion at this year’s spring show of the Dumfries and Galloway branch of the Blackface Sheep Breeders Association.

The eighth annual spring show was held on Thursday 5th March at Newton Stewart Auction Mart, by kind permission of Craig Wilson Ltd.

A total of 78 sheep were brought before the judge, Mr Billy Renwick of Blackhouse, with the home bred Tup Hogg and Ewe hogg class having 18 and 16 entries respectively.

Taking the champion title this year was a gimmer from JW Kay&Co, Gass, Straiton. Having won the overall champion as a ewe lamb at Colmonell she is by £24,000 Midlock, out of a ewe by £2,800 Midlock and was shown in lamb to £10,000 Dalwyne.

Taking the Reserve Champion ticket was a bought Tup Hogg from Glen, Gatehouse owned in partnership with Beoch, Loch Doon. Bought for £8,500 in Stirling from Dalchirla, he is by a HB son of £30,000 Aitkenhead and out of a ewe by a HB son of £14,000 Elmscleugh.

Winner of the newly presented Juvenile Handlers Trophy and also a Laggan Outdoor Voucher was Ruari McTaggart of Glen, Gatehouse with a Tup Hogg.

Little brother Fraser took the reserve spot with a Ewe Hogg. There were a total of 15 entries between the two Juvenile classes and competition was very strong. Again the stock judging was another very successful part of the evening, with Katrina Duncan of Larg, Creetown taking the trophy home.
