1883 Prime & Cast Sheep Sold.
A good showing of Lambs met a steady trade throughout with the 1637 sold averaging 182.6p/kg with lean lighter Lamb types the only Lambs difficult to move. Top price per head of £102 was paid for a pen of heavyweight Beltex from Scott Young, Tormitchell. Scott’s second pen sold at £100 again for heavyweight Beltex. Beltex Lambs sold to 219.1p/kg from Scott Young, Tormitchell. Whilst Texel Lambs sold to 214.6p/kg from N Paterson, Little Ervie. Cast Sheep sold at last year’s rates peaking at £78 for Texel Ewes from C Old, Corhulloch. Tups peaked at £71 from A Clark, Fineview.

Prime Lambs sold to a top price of 215.9p/kg for a pen of 44kgs Beltex Lambs from J Dunn & Co, Martnaham Mains, Dalrymple with the overall average being 185.6p/kg (-1.8p on the week) Again 38-39kgs lambs proved harder to sell whilst heavier sorts met a similar trade to last week.

Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited held their annual show and sale of 538 Store Cattle and Suckled Calves and 69 OTM cattle on Monday.
Store cattle met an animated demand probably the deareast ever experienced at this time of year with prices way ahead of sellers expectations. Topping the sale at £1550 was an outstanding Charolais cross bullock from Alan McHarrie, High Glenjorrie. This was followed at £1390 for the Champion – a Limousin bullock from Messrs Clements, Gatehouse Farm which sold to the judge Mr Sam Carlisle, Nether Dargavel. Heifers sold to £1315 for a Limousin cross from Mr T Davies, Cotton Street. Topping the price per kilo in the bullock section was a pen of quality Aberdeen Angus and Shorthorn crosses from W & W Stewart, Mayhaar, Kirkcolm at 280.5p per kilo. Heifers topped at 266.9p per kilo paid to DW Clement & Son, Gatehouse Farm for a pen of Charolais crosses. Overall averages for bullock levelled at 237.73p per kilo or £1011.08 per head and 219.8p per kilo or £867.82 for heifers. This represents a rise of 35p per kilo for both classes on last years trade.
69 OTM cattle were a good show for meat, averaging 137.9p and selling to a top price of 190p for Simmental Heifers from Congeith followed at 181p for an Aberdeen Angus Heifer from Compstonend, or to £1118 for an outstanding Ayrshire steer from Blackpark. Cows to 163p for a Limousin from Disdow followed at 160p for a Charolais from Barnbackle. Top price per head of £1224 and £1196 for Shorthorns from East Drummoddie, followed at £1132 for a Limousin from Disdow. Bulls sold to 172p or £1324 for a Limousin from Kirkdale.

The 1548 prime lambs sold easier on the week following the national trend, selling to average 184.7p per kilo. Top price per kilo of 220.5p for Beltex’s from Compstonend, followed at 214.9p for Texels from Low Creoch. Top price per head of £90.50 for Texels from Hannaston followed at £88 for Suffolks from Gerranton.
