1593 Prime & Cast Sheep Sold.

A smaller show of lambs forward mainly because of vendors reluctance to sell to take a drop in price saw 830 sold to average 139.4p/kg. Top price per head of £76 was paid for a huge Suffolk from I Stewart, Challochmun. Top price per kilo of 158p/kg being paid for 44kg Beltex from J Wright, Pinmore Mains. 760 Cast sheep sold to £104 & £102 for Texel Ewes from J McMillan, Carse O’ Clary with Beltex to £99 from the same home. Tups sold to £97 for a Texel from R Paterson, Kiltersan. The 517 Blackface Ewes averaged £41.80 peaking at £55.50 from Larg Farm, Creetown.

BLUEFACED LEICESTER RAM SALE

Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited held their 27th Annual Show and Sale of Bluefaced Leicester Rams on Friday 25th September 2015.

At the pre sale show, the judge, Mr John Cunningham, Parkgatestone, Biggar found his Champion in Lot Number 115 – a shearling ram from A & A Kirkpatrick, Barr, Sanquhar. It went on to sell for £1400 to the judge. Reserve Champion came from the same home with another shearling ram which sold for £2000 to J & W Wilson, Kirkmabreck Creetown. 1st prize Ram Lamb was Lot 201 from J Wight & Sons, Midlock which went on to sell for £2000 to Messrs S McClymont, Tinnis. Outwith these prizewinners a ram lamb from J & A Brown, Macqueston topped the sale at £2300 a shearling ram from Macqueston was joint top price at £2000.

As with all ram sales this year, bidders were both cautious and selective. It was obvious that bidders were looking for good bodied sheep and were will to pay for them. With a 87% clearance rate 166 Shearling Rams averaged £550.66, a drop of £48.49 on the year whilst 56 Ram Lambs averaged £648.04 a drop of £170.79 on the year.

BLACKFACE EWES & GIMMERS

Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited held their annual sale of Blackface Ewes and Gimmers on Wednesday 23rd September 2015 when they sold a total of 4868 sheep.

Topping the sale at £520 with a pen of five outstanding gimmers was JW Kay & Co, Gass, Straiton selling to Stuart Heads, Aitkenhead, Fenwick. The Blackface Ewe section topped at £150 for a pen of fifteen paid to Glen Farming Co, Gatehouse of Fleet by Emmet Coyle, Northern Ireland. As a result of a late spring and a moderate summer sheep were not in as good bloom as previous years and linked to poorer lamb prices all classes were back on the year as expected.

2711 Blackface uncrossed draft ewes averaged £68.74 compared to £79.20 for 2913 last year whilst 2182 Blackface Gimmers averaged £108.61 compared to £135.92 for 1796 last year.

WEEKLY PRIMESTOCK SALE

Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited held their weekly sale of 2218 Prime lambs and cast sheep on Tuesday 29th September 2015.

1493 lambs sold to average 141.6 per kg with SQQ being 144.01p per kg. All classes were cheaper on the week although not any worse than Mondays trade.

Top price per head was for a pen of cracking texels from Douganhill Farms at £78. Top price per kilo was for a pen of texels from Southwick Farms at 164.1p

725 cast sheep were forward. With 75% of the sale being blackface ewes the overall average shows a lot less. Texel ewes to £84 from Glenroan and Texel rams to £89 from Nether Corsock. Blackface ewes sold to £47.50(x3) from BQ Farms, Nether Craigenputtock and Horsecrook.

STORE CATTLE AND OTM CATTLE

Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited sold 95 store and OTM cattle at their fortnightly sale on Monday 28th September.

With many sellers holding off for next Saturday’s bumper sale, a smaller show of 64 Store cattle met with a spirited demand resulting in good returns. The majority of cattle were 500kg plus which reflects in the average price per kg being back. Topping the sale at £1180 were a pen of Limousin bullocks from A J Sharp, Barscarrow selling to A H Sproat & Son, Baldoon. Top price per kg for bullocks was 230.5p paid again to Barscarrow for Limousin crosses by TH & MA McMillan, Orchardton. A pen of Charolais heifers sold to £1105 off W L Hyslop & Co, West Logan. Overall averages were 212.6p for 52 bullocks and 200p for 12 heifers

A good show of well fleshed OTM cattle sold easily at high rates topping at 130p per kg for a Limousin off Nether Barr and £936.96 for a Luing off Robb Place. Clean heifers sold to 198p per kg off Straith Estates. Overall average for the cows was 101.81p
