PRIME & CAST SHEEP

Craig Wilson Ltd, Livestock Auction Mart, Newton Stewart had forward 1123 sheep, compromising of 1008 prime lambs, 115 cast ewes & tups. Prime Lambs sold to a top price of 177.6p/kg for a pen of 38kg Texel Lambs from Mr C Saunders, Barvennan, Newton Stewart with the overall average being 160.2p/kg (+9.3p on the week). Exports lambs were keenly bid for whilst 45kg and upwards met a similar trade to last week.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd, had forward 1884 sheep, comprising 1475 New Season Lambs, 409 Cast Ewes & Tups. Prime Lambs sold to a top price of 195.1p/kg for a pen of 41kg Texel Lambs from J Kennedy & Son, Perryston, Dunure with the overall average being 160.1p/kg (+ 7.1p on the week) All classes of lambs were easier sold today with all buyers looking for numbers making the trade sharper on the week.

Top price today was £125.50 for a pen of Texel ewes from G & M Wardrop & Son, South Craigton, Newton Mearns with the overall average being £67.82.

STORE CATTLE AND OTM CATTLE

Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited sold 38 Store Cattle and 74 OTM Cattle at their fortnightly sale on Monday 6th July 2015.

Store cattle met a fast selling trade with all classes being extremely well bid for. Topping the sale at £1080 was an Aberdeen Angus bullock consigned by RKG Farms, Irelandton. Next up at £1035 were a pen of Charolais bullocks from W & H McWhirter, Kenmure. Top price per kg in the bullock section was 261.8p paid to W & H McWhirter, Kenmure for Charolais crosses. Heifers sold to £980 per head for a British Blue from R Hamilton, Newton and to 224.8p per kg for another from the same home. Bullocks averaged 236.3p per kg, a rise of 12p on the last sale and 18p on last year whilst heifers levelled at 210.7p per kg, up 8p on the last sale and 6p on the year.

A much larger show of 74 OTM cattle were presented to the usual ringside of bidders. Despite being a plainer show with a much higher percentage of dairy cattle forward trade for all classes easily surpassed all sellers expectations. 34 Dairy bred cows topped at £872.96 or 137p per kg for Black and Whites from Dourie Farming Company, averaging 110.5p. 40 Beef bred cows sold to £1069.20 and 144p for Simmentals off Mains of Cairnbrock whilst overage heifers from RKG Farms peaked at 149p for Belted Galloways. Beef cows averaged 122p per kg with the overall sale average being 116.93p.

WEEKLY PRIMESTOCK SALE

Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited held their weekly primestock sale on Tuesday 7th July when they sold 1006 prime lambs and 147 cast ewes and rams.

The early week rise in trade continued at this sale with the SQQ average levelling at 162.15p per kg, + 11p per kg on last week. Topping the sale at £99 were a pair of Texel cross lambs from Finlay McMillan, Hannaston, Dalry. These were also top price per kg at 200p selling to Border Meats, Lockerbie. Next at 177p per kg were a pen of Texel crosses from JA & EM Smith, Valleyfield selling to Vivers Scotlamb Ltd.

The cast ewe ring witnessed another good trade with cast tups topping at £133 for Texels from Barnbackle and Texel ewes selling to £129 off Hillside.
