A Stewartry bakery went up in flames on Monday morning after what was thought to have been an electrical fault.

The Earth’s Crust Bakery at Laurieston has been completely destroyed in the blaze which took fire crews from Kirkcudbright and Dalbeattie to tackle.

Crews were met with a well-developed fire inside the brick building which was home to the business of Tom van Rooyen and wife Pavlina, which has grown over the last three years to supply popular artisans loaves to shops across the region including Newton Stewart.

Tom and Pavlina took to Facebook to tell customers of the news and said: “Our little bakery has gone this morning. There isn’t anything we can salvage apart from our experience, skills and memories. To all people close and far, thank you for all your support over the years and especially now. We loved making bread for you, talking bread and teaching you to make bread. Hopefully we will one day take the fresh loaves out of the oven again and fill the air with the smell of baking.”

The couple have yet to make a decision on the future of the business.
