THE popular Wickerman Festival has received an incredible FIVE nominations for the annual UK Festivals Awards.
The Dundrennan event, famous for its burning Wickerman and laid-back atmosphere, is estimated to have created an economic benefit of £5m-plus for the Dumfries and Galloway economy in the period 2005-2008.
The nominations for the UK Festivals Awards are in the following categories: 'Best Grass Roots Festival', 'Best Medium Sized Festival', Best Festival Line-Up', 'Best Toilets' and 'Best Family Friendly Festival'.
In 2007, the Wickerman did win the Best Grass Roots Festival Award, so its success in achieving five nominations in 2008 is highly commendable, but not totally unexpected.
The Wickerman Festival management team work closely with Dumfries and Galloway Council, which identified the festival as one of the original Beacon Events for Dumfries and Galloway: that is, one of a small group of events that have important economic regeneration and international tourism potential.
Since achieving Beacon Event status, the Wickerman has gone from strength to strength in its programming and customer service.
Gill Dykes, the council's events champion, said: "It is terrific to see the Wickerman Festival receive this recognition for its excellence across the board.
"The festival has a wonderful site and plenty of space for festival-goers to enjoy themselves, as well as quality music and entertainment. The council has been pleased to work in partnership with the Wickerman Festival as a Beacon Event since 2005 to develop its economic potential."
