AN irate wind farm opponent has voiced his concerns at the potential for the Southern Upland Way to be obliterated by turbines sprouting up along it.
Ben Palmer, from Bargrennan, made the comment after he had attended an open afternoon at New Luce aimed at informing people of proposals for a 130-turbine wind farm at Kilgallioch Forest that the popular walking route could be turned into the "Southern Turbine Way."
He said: "We have recently seen "consultations" for Artfield Fell extension, Ochiltree, Glenvernoch, and now we have the daddy of them all by Spanish-owned Scottish Power at Kilgallioch forest.
"I attended their consultation at New Luce and was absolutely apalled at the scale of the destruction which will be caused by their 160 x 450ft high turbines and spider's web of roads."
Ben's anger comes just a week before Wigtownshire councillors will debate proposals for yet another wind farm – this time at Barlockhart Moor near Glenluce.
The four-turbine site will sit between the A75 and A747 roads and, although recommended for refusal by the planners, has 245 signatures in support of it from people who visited a public display event.
Ben continued: "Scottish Power, of course, jump on the mythical global warming bandwagon with claims for masssive savings on CO2 emissions, yet when I asked them how much CO2 was emitted by Longannet and Cockenzie – which are owned by them – they could not tell me.
"When I asked how much less coal would be burned as a result of this windfarm they could not tell me.
"This proposal – along with Ochiltree and Glenvernoch – will mean the end of the Southern Upland Way as a tourist attraction. We could always rename it the 'The Southern Turbine Way'.
"I sincerely hope our councillors and MSPs take a reality check on Scotland's ability to change the climate and put a stop to this windfarm nonsense now. Scotland can't afford it."
A recent survey by Scottish Natural Heritage showed that 194,459 hectares of land in Scotland could be covered by wind farms – an area the size of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs.
This includes the space taken up by wind farms which have already been built, those which have planning permission, and those which are still going through the consent process.
A wind farm protester from Newton Stewart who voiced their opinions on The Scotsman website said this week: "The Southern Upland Way is now a sick joke. The death knell has been sounded for South West Scotland's tourism.
"We now hear of a further three monitoring masts going up. Any sane person must now realise that this is a money making scam of epic proportions that has been inflicted on the Scotland with the full blessing of our councillors and MSPs."
The fate of the Barlockhart Moor development will be decided at a meeting of the Wigtown Area Committee in Stranraer on Wednesday.
