A MAN was jailed for a year and banned from driving for 10 years after a trial last week at the sheriff court in Stranraer.
Twenty-two year old Terrance Westran, now a prisoner in Dumfries, was found guilty of taking a car from Hanover Square, Stra
nraer, without the consent of the owner on September 29 last year.
He was also convicted of driving dangerously at excessive speed in Ashwood Drive, John Simpson Drive, John Simpson Avenue and in Lewis Street the same day, driving over speed bumps causing the car to fly into the air, causing gravel and dirt to be thrown up to the danger of pedestrians and other road users.
He was also found guilty of driving when disqualified and without insurance.
A WHITHORN woman will go on trial next month after pleading not guilty to assaulting another woman last April.
Rachael Maginess, 30, 3E Kings Road, is charged with assaulting Victoria Barclay at Hamilton Park, Kirkcowan, on April 4 last year, by seizing her by the hair, punching her on the body, knocking her to the ground and kicking her to her injury.
A trail date of February 10 has been set.
TWO Stranraer men who had a stand up fight with each other in the town centre just after Christmas were sentenced at Stranraer Sheriff Court on Monday.
Martin McCaulay, 24, of 12 Millhill Street, and Daniel McEnroe, 19, of 7 Coronation Drive, both admitted conducting themselves in a disorderly manner and fighting with each other in George Street on December 27 last year.
McCauley also admitted struggling with police officers and breaching the peace.
Defending McCauley, solicitor Ian Milligan said that there were two opinions as to how this had all started. McCauley maintained he was challenged and struck by McEnroe first.
McEnroe's agent Paul Feeney said that his client did not go looking for trouble but difficulties seemed to "come to him."
Sentencing the pair, Sheriff Kenneth Robb fined McCauley £500, suggesting he kept out pubs in future, he then ordered McEnroe to do 140 hours of community service, commenting that he had a habit of not doing what he was told.
A WHITHORN man appeared from custody on Monday at the sheriff court in Stranraer to plead not guilty to being in a car when twice over the limit.
Richard Parrott, 22, of 33 Glasserton Court, denies being in charge of the car in Hanover street, Stranraer last Sunday with a reading of 79 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the limit being 35.
His trial will take place on May 10.
A TRIAL date of May 24 was set for a Newton Stewart man who denies gouging the eye of a police officer last Friday night.
Thirty-five-year old Andrew Strachan, of 12 Ewart Drive, appeared from custody on Monday at Stranraer Sheriff Court to plead not guilty to struggling with an officer and applying pressure to the eye of an officer with his thumb, causing injury.
A GARLIESTON pensioner who denies threatening to kill his wife will stand trial on May 24.
Robert Dennison, 74, of 7 South Street, appeared from custody on Monday at the sheriff court in Stranraer to plead not guilty to conducting himself in a disorderly manner and threatening to kill his wife Jean at his home last Friday.
A MAN who struggled with police officers because he did not want to be handcuffed was jailed at the Sheriff Court in Stranraer on Monday.
Steven Scott, 27, of Caledonia Court, who appeared from custody, was arrested after police arrived at his home on unrelated matters in the early hours of last Sunday.
Scott's solicitor, Paul Feeney, said that he had been concerned that the officers would put the handcuffs on too tightly, something the accused claimed had happened previously.
Having pled guilty to breaching the court order, Sheriff Kenneth Robb returned to his original offences - stealing a ruler form a solicitors' office in Stranraer on April 16 last year and trying to break into a car with a screwdriver in Caledonia Court in the town the same month.
The sheriff jailed him for 70 days for resisting arrest. He was also fined £500.
