Young mums in street assault
TWO young mothers who assaulted women on a street after a night out have been fined this week.
Emma Hughes (19) of Princes Street, Newton Stewart and Chloe McGuffie (20) who lives in Selkirk admitted the assaults, which took place on February 10th at Queen Street and Dashwood Square in Newton Stewart.
The court heard that at 1am, McGuffie became involved in an argument with Lynne Templeton on Queen Street before pulling her to the ground and slapping her.
McGuffie was then restrained by a pal and Miss Templeton ran off towards Dashwood Square, followed by McGuffie. Hughes then appeared and approached Amanda McLean, who was also standing at the Square. There was an exchange of words and she then struck Miss McLean's face and she fell to the ground as police arrived.
Fiscal depute Kay Jardine said: "Police officers restrained Hughes by holding onto her but she continued to kick the complainer as she lay on the ground. She was then arrested and taken to the local police station."
Lawyer Paul Feeney said that McGuffie had been out drinking with her friends whilst staying in the area at her step-father's on a break following the death of her mother to cancer.
He added that the incident kicked off because of a history between Miss Templeton reportedly bullying McGuffie's younger sister when they were at school.
He said: "She admits she simply lost her temper. She is currently on maternity leave and is due to go back to work as a shop assistant in September."
Of Hughes, lawyer Ian Milligan said that Hughes claimed Miss McLean had been overly nasty and abusive towards her throughout the evening.
He added that she lives with her 3-year old daughter and is on benefits.
A third accused, Robert Taylor (21) of Laurelbank, Castle Douglas admitted committing a breach of the peace during the incident by fighting.
Sheriff Kenneth Robb told McGuffie and Hughes: "This is not the first time you have been involved in this type of assault."
And to Hughes he added: "Kicking someone when they're down is what aggravates this for you."
He fined them both £375 and allowed McGuffie to pay it off at £20 per week.
Hughes offered £5 per week but the sheriff said: "No, make it £10 so there's less to spend on alcohol."
Taylor was fined £65.
