THE Rotary Club of Newton Stewart have announced Neil Martin as their Citizen of the Year.
Neil is a worthy recipient of the annual award, having contributed to the community in many ways and over many years through his involvement in a variety of activities in Newton Stewart and the Machars.
Neil is a Gallovidian who is fiercely proud of his roots and his native land. He was born and raised in Port William and left school aged 14 to work on a local farm.
However, in his early 20s he demonstrated his desire for service by joining the King's Own Scottish Borderers and spent the next 15 years serving Queen and country including spending time in Malaysia during its turbulent years.
Returning to his homeland, Neil eventually joined the staff of the Douglas Ewart High School in Newton Stewart, becoming head janitor. During his 25 years in the Ewart, Neil endeared himself to successive generations of pupils and fellow members of staff -always with a friendly greeting.
Nothing was ever too much trouble to Neil and, when asked, he would go out of his way to help - more often than not, way beyond the call of paid employment.
The respect with which he was held was magnified in his retiral function. One of his extra-curricular activities was to school football, particularly as a referee, where he was always immaculately turned out in uniform. Neil was heavily involved with the Galloway Pageant for 16 years, not only running activities but as chairman for several years.
Neil has been a mainstay in the Machars Lions Club for the better part of 20 years, and his skill in fundraising for the local community is common knowledge.
Many local organisations have benefited financially through his efforts, including Galloway Mountain Rescue Team. Just mention 'bingo' and Neil and his Lions colleagues will be there! He is about to take over the presidential reins in his club for the third time.
Without doubt, Neil is one of the unsung heroes who work away in the community without seeking high profile, or indeed thanks, as his reward is being able to help others and see the pleasure that brings.
