Joy over osprey chicks thriving
GALLOWAY'S latest osprey family are thriving on a diet of the freshest fish.
Rangers based at the County Buildings in Wigtown are delighted with the progress that all three chicks have made.
Dumfries and Galloway Council ranger Elizabeth Tindal said: "The youngest is almost as large as the others and growing well.
"All three chicks were ringed last week by Jon Warren from the North Solway Ringers with white plastic rings with black lettering so the chicks are 'BA' formerly chick three, 'BB' formerly chick one and chick two has a metal ring ending in 08 so it is '08'.
"Unfortunately our third plastic ring broke as it was opened to be put on so we did not get the ring 'BC' put on to chick two. However, it means that we have this ring to add to our display in the Wigtown County Buildings.
"The chicks have been standing and flapping more and more and we would expect the eldest (BB) to fly for the first time around the July 29th and the others in the following few days.
"They should then be on and off the nest a lot and we wait to see what will happen with teaching three chicks to fish. How will EP (the father osprey) cope?
"My fears of EP not being up to the job of bringing home enough fish were totally unfounded and at the moment he is bringing in a plentiful supply of smallish fish throughout the day, so I am sure that he will be up to the job of passing on his skills."
