The Galloway Gazette continues its search for the Tearoom of the Year and this month Louise Kerr visited Brambles Tearoom in Stranraer.

Since it opened a year ago, Brambles Tearoom on Stranraer’s Commerce Road has built a reputation for giving the customers exactly what they want.

Calling in at lunchtime on Tuesday, the light and airy tearoom was bustling with customers enjoying lunch. Hearing that I was doing a review for the paper one couple said they came for lunch three times a week and thought the staff were marvellous because they adapted the menu to suit their tastes.

Manager Marlene Wither says the customer is king at Brambles and “if someone wants a bacon roll with custard - that’s what they’ll get.”

I settled down to a large slice of cherry pie and cream with a cup of coffee. Perhaps it was the current re-run of the TV classic “Twin Peaks” that inspired me but it was a “damn fine” cherry pie, bursting with tasty filling.

Brambles is open daily from 8am to 5pm seven days a week and cater for functions as well as providing a takeaway service.

Their comprehensive menu takes you from all day breakfast - are you man enough to try the ‘Big Boys breakfast’ of two slices of bacon, two sausages, potato scone, beans, two eggs, black pudding, tea/coffee and toast? - through lunch with a choice of starters and main courses including lasagne, scampi and steak pie.

There is vegetarian option and a special kids menu with all their favourites like fish fingers, hot dogs, burgers and chicken nuggets, and of course, chips.

The team can also make you a fresh sandwiches, toasties, salads, baked potatoes, paninis, baguettes and roll with a host of tasty fillings.

As I have an insatiable sweet tooth I was drooling over the array of cakes, scones and traybakes on display. What a variety of scones for a start - plain, fruit, cherry, treacle and white chocolate and ginger.

Also in the line up were enormous strawberry tarts, coffee cake, carrot cake, Victoria sponge, cherry pie, rhubarb pic, key lime pie, cheesecake, empire biscuits, shortbread, millionaire’s shortbread and rocky road. I fully intend to return next week and every week after until I have been through the lot - they all looked mouthwatering.

Brambles are running a special offer on afternoon teas but it finishes today - £10 for two people, so don’t miss out!
