Surprise return for birdwatcher

The surprise return of Gordon Yates to Stewartry Birdwatchers with a Film Show on Thursday 10th November at 7.30pm is the story of his three visits to Iceland to find and film the Great Northern Diver and other birds together with spectacular scenery and flowers.

A welcome return of a popular speaker to which all are invited. Especially suitable for children.

Stewartry birdwatchers winter season of talks got off to a ‘flying start’ when Brian Morrell, the manager of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Caerlaverock Reserve, spoke about the charismatic Barnacle Goose.

There are three populations of this lovely black and white goose and those which nest on Spitzbergen, on the Svalbard archipelago, at 78 degrees north, winter mostly on the north and south coasts of the Solway. The 2015/2016 count showed an estimated 41,000 had arrived for winter.
